Region NYC is a platform for ideas about cities, infrastructure, and the systems that connect them. Region NYC advocates for a regional approach to transportation/planning in the New York metropolitan region. Solving interdependent, intermodal, interdisciplinary problems in a region of more than 20 million people depends on planning beyond boundaries – cultural, political, geographical, or technological – to question assumptions, build trust and capacity, identify contextual solutions, and bring people together.

Originally launched in 2012 as PlaNYourCity, the blog began as a collaborative outlet for planners, designers, and urbanists to share research, observations, and experiments in thinking about the built environment. Over the years, dozens of contributors brought their own perspectives – on transportation, housing, public space, architecture, and policy – creating a deep archive of thoughtful, often ahead-of-its-time writing.
In 2020, the platform evolved into Region NYC. The New York metropolitan area – home to more than 20 million people – functions as an interconnected system, where transportation, land use, infrastructure, and environment cannot be understood within political or geographic boundaries alone. Region NYC advocates for this regional approach, exploring interdependent, intermodal, and interdisciplinary challenges with curiosity and practicality.
Today, Region NYC sits at the intersection of ideas and experience. In addition to publishing, it is now part of a growing tour operation that brings these concepts into the real world – translating complex systems into stories you can see, walk, and ride through.
While the platform has changed, its foundation remains the same:
- A space for exchange across disciplines
- A place to test ideas and challenge assumptions
- A bridge between New York and the rest of the world
- An archive of work that continues to inform future thinking
Region NYC is ultimately about connection: between people, places, and perspectives. Whether through writing, research, or tours, the goal is simple – to better understand how cities work, and how they can work better together.
