The Sandpit

The Sandpit is a cool depiction of a day in the life of New York City urban landscape. Sam O’Hare’s short film recorded in 35,000 stills on Vimeo has won the 2012 Webby Awards for Best Viral, and the 2010 Prix ARS Electronica Award of Distinction.

Sam O’Hare has a degree in architecture from UK and is self taught in computer graphics. His tilt-shift photographic technique makes large scenes look small, creating a surprising visual effect of a miniature set.  His time-lapse short of New York City was recorded in five days in the summer of 2009.  The camera was placed on the balconies, penthouses, and roof tops of buildings in New York City.  Some of the shots were taken by a hand held camera from the bridges and through the fences. The result is amazing and beautiful.
