This past weekend I visited my grandmother, who is in her mid-90’s. She is a pretty amazing lady, but seeing someone you love age is never easy. The trip got me thinking about grandmas and home and women… and the news was generous in providing related reading material (and I couldn’t ignore the cosmic confluence of International Women’s Day, which was on March 8th), so I thought I would share some of the pieces that were good food for thought.
- It is 2013, but fair and humane treatment of women is still an issue both internationally (link to video) and here in the US. I find this appalling. Hopefully when I am my grandmother’s age this will no longer be an issue.
- Next City picked out some amazing women planners in honor of International Women’s Day.
- Robots that could save US jobs-normally technological improvements are seen as threats to jobs and security, but this particular type of robot was designed to assist humans, not replace them. One of the ideas is that they could be used to help the elderly, perhaps a way to lengthen the duration of one’s independence and ability to live at home as we age.
- Cree marched in support of Idle No More, a movement in Canada that is seeking fair and inclusive policies for indigenous people. The march was inspired by this amazing lady. Rumor has it that one of my great grandmothers was Cree, so I tend to keep an eye on news about them and Nova Scotia. Considering the melange of racial tensions in the United States, it is easy to forget how abysmally North American indigenous people have been treated (even recently).
- Returning to my own apartment and its clutter made this piece a good reminder to get rid of the unnecessary things that take up worry space in my head so I can focus more on the important things, like visiting grandmas and making more time for the important women in my life.
